The great thing about government grants is that they are available to a huge range of people. Whether you are an individual seeking finance for a personal project which might ultimately benefit society as a whole, or whether you are the CEO of a large corporation with a plan to improve services or products in a particular area of life, government grants should always be considered as a possibility.
This is all very well, but in reality, we should look at the entities which are the most likely to receive government grants, rather than those who are "able" to receive them. If you want to get really technical on the matter - any organization - even a government department, could actually meet the criteria for a government grant. However, the likelihood of the government given funds to itself is very slim, and would only be done in extreme cases.
Who Is Most Likely To Get A Government Grant?
At the end of the day, a government grant is an area of government spending which is unique to all the other areas where they spend on a regular basis. This is the one area where the government can target, isolate, and be bias towards one particular person over another - or one particular organization / industry over another. To understand this idea - let's take the example of a school. If the government was to come out with a new budget, which allowed for a new swimming pool to be built at School X - every other school in the entire region would complain - because this is hugely bias.
However, if the school applied for the pool itself in a government grant scheme, knowing that the money would not be given to them on an across the board basis - they might indeed end up with the cash. Here, as you have blatantly just seen - the government is providing new funds to one school, without having the obligation to provide it to the thousands of schools in a particular state or region.
So, who is most likely to get the government grants? Well, education organizations do come in at the top of the list. Interestingly though, start up business and individuals come in a close second - which means that if you are basing your funding hopes around a government grant - you have the benefit of a high probability working with you.
